The course is connected to the following study programs

Course contents

Basic training in analytical and creative processes with product development as a result. The exercises consists of drawing, 3D studies and studies og models (prototypes) in order to develop creativity and analytical thinking, and to achieve a theoretical and practical understanding of the design process.

Basic structure and properties of building materials with respect to porosity, density, moisture, thermal properties, strength, elasticity and volume stability. Properties of concrete are reviewed in particular through a laboratory program.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student is expected to:

· Understand the subject's correlation to the other courses in the civil engineering program.

· Explain and be able to describe the correlation between function and design of structures.

· Explain and be able to describe the physical properties of common building materials.

· Perform basic calculations on the properties of the main building materials.

· Make simple drawings and digital models.

Examination requirements

Students must pass the compulsory assignment(s) in order to take the examination.

Teaching methods

Lectures and laboratory exercises.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.
