Course contents

The subject is about the child/children and their surroundings and how one can, with the help of possibilities in the child's environment, implement coping and change processes. The course emphasizes facilitating physical, mental, social and personal growth and strengthening children's and young people's self-care. The course focuses on vulnerable children and young people's everyday life in various care / treatment measures and on more preventative measures in the child's usual environment, such as in school and the home environment. Emphasis is placed on rights and frameworks with a view to understanding the space for maneuvering for change by means of environmental therapy, as well as the possibilities and limitations of the institution's work. Various environmental therapeutic directions and modalities are reviewed. The student will also gain insight into issues related to violence, abuse and abuse based on an inter-governmental approach. Children's participation and involvement is a central theme of the class.

Learning outcomes

After course completion the student should:

Knowledge:

  • have broad knowledge of various pedagogical methods and measures within environmental therapeutic work in various settings, such as child welfare institutions, home-based services, school and prevention work

  • have knowledge about facilitating good coping skills through activities and exercises

  • have basic knowledge of the signs and symptoms of children and adolescents who have been exposed to violence and abuse, possible causes, expressions and consequences

  • have broad knowledge of communication and the importance of relationships in interactions with children exposed to physical, mental or sexual abuse

Skills:

  • be able to apply a broad and multidisciplinary knowledge base in environmental therapeutic work with children, young people and families

  • be able to build safe relationships and communicate in a way that promotes involvement and participation

  • be able to meet children and adolescents exposed to violence and abuse with empathy and interdisciplinary approaches

Core competencies:

  • be able to plan, implement and evaluate varied environmental therapeutic measures over time alone or as a member of a team, in line with ethical requirements and guidelines

  • be familiar with and able to use approaches for children and adolescents exposed to violence and abuse

  • be able to communicate with children and young people and facilitate their participation and involvement

Examination requirements

Several sub-tasks must be passed. Further details will be given in Canvas at the beginning of the semester. There is a requirement for a minimum of 70% compulsory attendance of the teaching/classroom time. Participation in mentor group requires a minimum of 80% attendance.

Teaching methods

The course includes teaching, seminar, group work and skills development.

Assessment methods and criteria

Individual semester assignment with analysis of an event in environmental therapy. The event can be reproduced by video, voice recording or as a written story. The report must be approx. 3500 words. The assignment will be graded.
