The research group is studying materials used in energy technology. We particularly focus on research related to sustainable development, with a main emphasis on materials used in renewable energy production and energy storage. We collaborate with:

The main areas are:

  • Solar cell technology: Solar cells convert sunlight into electrical energy.
  • Battery technology: Batteries store and deliver electrical energy through chemical reactions.
  • Fuel cells: Fuel cells produce electrical energy through chemical reactions, such as the conversion of hydrogen to water vapor.
  • Thermoelectric materials: Materials that convert two different temperature zones into electrical energy.

Solar cell technology: UiA operates an outdoor testing facility for monitoring and characterization of various types of PV modules, as well as continuous collection of solar irradiation data and meteorological data. Several grid-connected systems are also monitored, and the various data sources are collected in a database managed by UiA and accessible for student and research purposes. Equipment is shown in the images below.

Neonsee solar simulator for characterization of solar cells (four-point I-V measurement with temperature regulation).
Sinton Instruments QSSPC. Lifetime measurement that indicates the quality of the solar cell.
Characterization of solar cells I-V curve and efficiency in solar simulator.
Electroluminescence (EL) camera and software system from Brightspot Automation LLC, DSLR camera (6000 x 4000 pixels, filters, 35 mm lens). When PV modules are subjected to electrical current in a dark room, the solar cells emit light that is captured by the EL camera. Dark areas reveal lower quality due to degradation, defects, and cracks.
Solys2 tracker with GHI, DHI, and DNI measurement. In addition, POA and Albedo are measured. Kipp & Zonen CMP11 pyranometers with CVF4 ventilators and an SHP1 pyrheliometer are used.
Spectrafy SolSIM-D2 instrument for spectral measurement of direct solar radiation. In addition, spectral distribution of global horizontal and global tilted (GPOA) irradiation is measured with two Spectrafy SolSIM-G instruments.​​​​​

Weather parameters are monitored using reference cells (Si-V-1.5TC Ingenieurbüro Mencke & Tegtmeyer GmbH), wind sensor R.M. Young model 05103 (approximately 2 m height), air temperature sensor Campbell Scientific 107 with radiation shield 41303-5A, Solar-Log Base 100 Sensor Box for GHI and wind (approximately 0.3 m height), and Vaisala WXT535 multisensor weather station for rainfall, relative humidity, air pressure, and air temperature.
PV module surface temperatures are measured with 16 Campbell Scientific 110PV surface temperature sensors on various module types in grid-connected systems and research facilities.

Datalogger Campbell Scientific CR1000 with multiplexer AM16/32B and TCP/IP interface (40 differential inputs).
Dynaload MCL488 programmable electronic loads for measuring current-voltage curves.
Stationary I-V curve measurement with Labview/National Instruments NI 9220, NI 9221, and NI 9264 modules in cDAQ9174 chassis for analog I/O (connected to Dynaload electronic loads). I-V curves are continuously run on each PV module in the research facility approximately every 20 seconds, stored as 1-minute data. The modules are held at MPP between I-V measurements.
Hand-held IV-curve meter for measuring current-voltage characteristics of PV modules/systems. We have two different instruments: (A) HT I-V500w I-V curve tracer, 1500 V, with measurement of irradiance and temperature. (B) Seaward PV200 Kit, includes AC/DC current clamp, 1 kV insulation resistance test, and measurement of irradiance, air temperature and PV temperature.
Fluke Ti400 thermal imager, a handheld infrared camera for imaging temperature differences in PV modules.
Ultraviolet fluorescence (UVF) measurement with 2 Trotec UV Torchlight 15F with filter attachment 365 nm to image degradation and crack formation in PV modules.
Portable spectrometer, 2 pcs. OceanOptics HR2000+ with fiber cable and Cosine Corrector. Calibration lamps HG1 (Mercury Argon) and DH2000 (UV-VIS-NIR). Measurement of spectral distribution of light, wavelength range 200-1100 nm.

 

Projects

Energimaterialer collaborates with industry and research partners in a variety of projects in the following areas:

  • Fuel cells: Solid oxide, PEM, and alkaline, with a focus on cell testing and new materials.
  • Thermoelectric materials: Focus on material testing, degradation, and electrical measurements.
  • High-temperature materials synthesis: Titanium metals, innovative conductive oxides, polymer membranes.
  • Metallurgical scaling: Collaboration with NORCE.
  • Solar cell technology: Collaboration in the SuSolTech FME program and FME SOLAR on performance and degradation of solar cells; collaboration with REC SOLAR Norway on improving commercial solar cell technology.
  • Theoretical studies of solar cell behavior and new solar cell concepts.
  • Outdoor measurements: Solar irradiation, spectral distribution, meteorological parameters, grid and building integration, performance and degradation. Roof area on J-building dedicated to outdoor characterization of solar modules.
