Democracy Week: Film screening and Q&A

Banner Democracy Week

Hive (Albanian: Zgjoi; 84 min) is a 2021 Kosovan drama film written and  directed by Blerta Basholli in her  directorial debut. The film stars Yllka  Gashi, Çun Lajçi and Aurita Agushi. It  premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival and became the first film in  Sundance history to win all three main  awards – the Grand Jury Prize, the Audience Award and the Directing  Award – in the World Cinema Dramatic  Competition.

Hive is about the hard-won and painful rewards of resilience. It is based on the  true story of Fahrije, a woman in limbo  since her husband's forceful  disappearance during the war. Along  with her grief she contends with her  family’s financial struggles and the grip  of patriarchal norms in her village. She embarks on a business venture to  secure a livelihood and in the process draws together a community of women, shared knowledge and complex experiences intersecting trauma, vulnerability and strength.
