Before arrival

Once you have signed an agreement with the University of Agder, there are a few steps you need to take in order to be able to work in Norway.

You will find most of the information below and more on UiA's internal pages (intranet) for employees. You will receive access soon after you have signed your work agreement with UiA.

For employees: Innaskjærs

Visas and permits

After signing a work agreement with UiA, you should apply for a visa and a work or residence permit as soon as possible. We collaborate with Business Region Kristiansand on this process.

Permanent residence permit for EU/EEA nationals

Permanent residence permit for non-EU/EEA citizens

Housing

Academic staff

UIA has no separate housing service for incoming academic staff. Your Faculty may be able to help you make arrangements for short-term accommodation if necessary. Please speak to the contact at your Faculty.

On the Euraxess Norway portal you will find useful information concerning accomodation in Norway.

PhD students

PhD students may apply for accommodation to the Student Association (SiA), both single – room and family flats. Please note that salaried PhD students pay a 30 % higher rent than ordinary students. Student Association rooms and flats are not equipped with bedlinen or kitchen utensils.

Traveling to Norway

How to get here and around.

Stays lasting 90 days or less

You do not need to apply for a work or residence permit. Researchers from some countries must obtain a visitor's visa before they can enter Norway. Please contact the nearest Norwegian Embassy/Consulate General.

Stays lasting more than 90 days

Once you have received a job offer, please make sure you have a work and/or residence permit if you are going to stay longer than 90 days in Norway.

Nordic citizens may stay and work in Norway indefinitely without a permit.

Researchers from EU/EEA/EFTA countries can freely travel to Norway and start working as soon as they arrive. In order to stay in Norway for more than 3 months, however, you still need a residence permit. EU/EEA/EFTA citizens may apply at a Norwegian Embassy/Consulate General or from within Norway to the local police or through the Service Centre for Foreign Workers in Oslo or Stavanger.

Researchers from outside the EU/EEA/EFTA countries must obtain a work and residence permit before they can enter Norway and start working. Citizens from non-EU/EEA countries will have to submit their application at the nearest Norwegian Embassy/Consulate General to obtain a visa/permit. Once in Norway, they have to register at the local police station.

Start in time, don't delay

The processing of visas and residence and work permits may be very time-consuming (see case-processing time). Be sure to carefully complete the appropriate application form and to submit all required documents well in advance of your planned date of arrival in Norway. This will ensure correct and time-efficient processing of your application by the involved authorities.
