How to work safely off campus

Being able to bring digital equipment outside campus provides opportunities, like being able to work from home when necessary. But it also adds new security risks. Fortunately, there are steps to take in order to minimise these risks.

7 tips to stay secure when working remotely

Keep University and private equipment separate.

Avoid using University equipment for personal purposes, and vice versa.

Keep your devices up to date

Make sure your computer, tablet and mobile phone always are up to date with regards to security upgrades. Update your devices continuously – avoid postponing.

Classify and protect your content
You choose your classification directly when using Office 365. Documents are secured in line with the classification chosen. The documents get security measures integrated, like encryption, tracing and access control. This solution is available to all employees and students with a Windows computer, but everyone must be aware of where content is stored.

Use a strong and unique password.
Remember, using the same password for your University account and your private accounts is not permitted.

Avoid working from open and unencrypted public networks.

Lock your computer every time you step away from it.
This prevents children or others from accessing UiA documents and accidentally deleting or publishing content. The keyboard shortcut to lock your computer is WINDOWS KEY + L (on Windows computers) or CONTROL+COMMAND+Q (on Mac computers).

Be alert and forward suspicious emails to spam@uia.no.
