Summary of thesis
Digital technologies are now entrenched in the core operations of organisations providing critical services. This is due to ongoing innovations in work and practice. As new applications and services are developed, there is a convergence of traditional physical infrastructures and rapidly changing modern digital technologies.
This thesis explores the adoption, integration, and repurposing of sensor-based digital systems in organizations providing critical services during times of crisis. The methodology applied is qualitative, combining an empirical case study and conceptual analysis. The research uncovers the organizational capacities required for effective utilization of digital systems during ongoing crisis, as well as the novel risks and vulnerabilities associated with their implementation.
The results present a conceptual model that bridges the gap in understanding the resilience and evolution of digital infrastructure, offering a roadmap for organizations to navigate uncertain times and thrive in the face of adversity. This research provides valuable insights into the transformative potential of sensor-based digital systems in organisations and their role in ensuring secure operations in unstable environments.
The contributions of the thesis include practical insights for organisations providing critical services and recommendations for mitigating risks, and a roadmap for organizations to enhance their resilience in times of crisis.
