About the department

We offer bachelor programmes in public health work and community-oriented nutrition work, and a one-year study in community-oriented nutrition. The master's programme in public health science is a natural continuation of the bachelor's programmes but is also open to candidates with different academic backgrounds. We are part of the primary school and kindergarten teacher education at UiA with a specialisation in food and meals in kindergartens and a master's programme in food and health didactics. In our studies, we integrate theory and practice, and we emphasise preparing students for the workforce whether they are to work in teaching, research, or applied nutrition or public health work.

We believe in the strength of collaboration and work with schools, kindergartens, municipalities, county councils, businesses, and voluntary organisations. This provides our students with practical experiences and research opportunities that enrich their learning and contribute to their professional development.

Key research areas in the department are food and nutrition and physical activity at different stages of life, women's health and occupational health, social inequality in health, and educational approaches to how pupils and young adults should acquire food and nutrition competence. We develop and evaluate measures to promote good living habits and health throughout the lifecycle, with a particular focus on critical life stages such as young adulthood, pregnancy, early childhood, and teenage years.
