Stephen Dougherty received his Ph.D. in English from Indiana University. He is Professor of American Literature and Culture in the Department of Foreign Languages and Translation.

Literature and science, world and comparative literature, literature and pedagogy, science fiction and cosmology.

In this essay I read Geoff Ryman's novel Air (2004) as a rumination on the process whereby our orientation to the world is modified by the introduction of new media technology. The imagined technology in Ryman's novel-Air-is the Internet without physical interface: it is the World Wide Web plugged directly into people's minds. In terms of the logic of the narrative, Air is and is not the Internet. Ryman uses this gap between similitude and difference to open up some critical distance for readers to reflect on the physical and psychical effects of the Internet and other digital communications technologies.

Discourses of touch have become important discursive sites around which questions concerning the body, its materiality, and its place in the sphere of cultural analysis are currently arrayed — the powers of touch that we postulate influence our understanding of the limits and capacities of both our bodies and the technologies through which we extend our bodily touch. What is at stake in the contestation of touch, then, are really questions about communication and community. How does this bodily reorientation in the humanities and in the social sciences affect our understanding of how we communicate, and what we communicate? How does it impact our thinking about our embodied relation to communication technologies? In order to address these questions, we must first consider how (and why) some of these new rhetorics of touch announce themselves as 'post‐deconstructive'. That is, we must understand that the relation between these new rhetorics of touch and deconstruction is critical to their constitution. This essay explores three books — Ann Weinstone's "Avatar Bodies" (2004), Erin Manning's "Politics of Touch" (2007), and Jean‐Luc Nancy's "Being Singular Plural" (2000) — wherein this relation is negotiated.

The classical cognitive scientific model of autism purports to explain why we are social creatures. Yet it has attempted to do so through varieties of the mind-as-computer analogy, which undermines the model's ability to carry out its analyses of society. I investigate this problematic through the lens of Elizabeth Moon's novel about autism, "The Speed of Dark".

This essay examines the unconscious as modeled by cognitive science and compares it to the psychoanalytic unconscious. In making this comparsion, the author underscores the important but usually overlooked fact that computational psychology and psychoanalytic theory are both varieties of posthumanism. He argues that if posthumanism is to advance a vision for our future that is no longer fixated on a normative image of the human, then its own normative claims about the primacy of Darwinian functioning must be disrupted and undermined through a renewed emphasis on its Freudian heritage.

In recent years a paradigm shift has been underway in the humanities and the social sciences. This shift has resulted in the declining influence of "constructionism," where the body's meaningfulness is understood in terms of social practices, and the rising influence of theories of embodiment that take fuller account of the body's materiality and its physical situatedness.
