  This article gives a brief introduction to relevance theory and its place in linguistic theory and practice. First it addresses the problem concerning oral and written language to sort out the difficulties of using a written discourse to exemplify concepts originally meant for spoken communication. Particular problems revolve around the application of non-demonstrative inference processes, potentially relevant stimuli, cognition and art. Further the concepts of intended meaning and optimized relevance are applied to William Blake¿s ¿Infant Sorrow¿, with and without the illuminated plate. Despite shortcomings, relevance theory can shed a new light on responses to poetry, if used as an analytical tool.

  Can foreign language students really tell teachers of English anything about English poetry? They definitely can. This book explores the unknown and exciting territory of the minds of student readers when they read a poem for the first time. By exposing advanced students of English to an experimental and slow line by line method of reading, Wiland has facilitated their sincere and uncensored encounter with poetry, an encounter rarely exhibited in classes at universities, colleges and upper secondary schools. To position the readers constructively, Wiland has developed the concept of the ¿dynamic prospecting countersignatory¿, based on theories of reader-response, language learning and aspects of Derrida¿s theories of deconstruction. Her findings show that the readers tend to struggle with low self-esteem as poetry readers, even when they experience great emotional involvement and cognitive understanding, expressing pleasure at the slow line by line reading process. Poetry: Prima Vista may therefore shed new light on poetry literacy among foreign language students and inspire teachers of English at all levels to renewed attitudes and interesting approaches to poetry.

  Female Voices and Religious Identity. Dialogues with Students of Literature This paper presents and discusses a research project on literary response among female students of American literature, where religion is an issue and where the respondents are from both majority and minority cultural backgrounds. The research is based on a discussion of reader-response theories, feminism and world religion in an attempt to elicit honest responses to the understanding of an emotionally laden issue and to investigate the possibility of using the theme of religion to foster tolerance and intercultural understanding among young readers. The results of the research show interesting similarities and also thought provoking differences between respondents from various cultural backgrounds.

  My concern in this paper is to discuss how aspects of tolerance, identity and religious experience can be compared and contrasted in two female American writers, O¿Connor and Lahiri. For all their seemingly different surface representations, both stories reflect aspects of American culture and are thematically infused with religious references, O¿Connor with the fundamentalist Christianity of the South, and Lahiri with immigrant Hinduism. Both writers challenge the notions of religious belief and practice and thus open up for new perspectives on how female identity can be shaped in a modern world. To integrate the cultural landscape in the study, I apply Catherine Albanes¿s concepts of ¿ordinary and extraordinary religion¿. In this way I hope to show how two female voices half a century and three oceans apart express a unique experience based on their respective religious heritages, moulding them into a personal and recognizable tale of female identity, tolerance and transformation.
