Writing for publication

Target group: Academic staff and PhD candidates who want to publish in English language academic journals. Maximize your chances of getting published in English by understanding what is required in peer reviewed journals. Develop your academic writing skills and hone them for the requirements in the top journals in your field.

Course contents:

  • What goes into publishing a research article?
  • The writing process and strategies for effective writing
  • Writing with good structure and style

Course duration: 5 lessons, 2+3 per session, 2 times held on two different weeks

Course holder:
Heidi Klockmann is an Associate Professor in English linguistics at UiA. Over the last ten years, she has taught on several academic and scientific writing courses, as well as on topics of English grammar and phonology. She holds a doctorate degree in linguistics from Utrecht University in the Netherlands (2017), where she also earned her MA degree in linguistics (2012). She completed her BA degree in linguistics at the University of California in Los Angeles (2009).

 

Presentation in English

Target group: Academic staff and PhD candidates who are planning to present at an English-speaking conference. Raise your research profile by enhancing your English skills for communicating your research to others.

Course contents:

  • Preparation of material, structuring content and delivery
  • Improving pronunciation
  • Visual aids and body language
  • Feedback on part of your own presentation

 
Course duration: 6 lessons, 2 sessions of 3 lessons held on two consecutive weeks.
 
Course holder:
Arild Høie Henriksen is Associate Professor of English language and didactics at UiA. He has taught English grammar, phonetics, and didactics to students and teachers in Norway over the last 20 years and given lectures to audiences ranging from one listener to 130 students. He holds a PhD in English linguistics from the University of Agder (2020), and two MAs, one in English from the University of Oslo (2002), and another in Language, Mind and Communication from the University of Newcastle, UK (2001).

 

Public Outreach in English

Target gruop: This course is for administrative and academic staff who are required to present to UiA partners or the general public in English. The course aims to support the participants in their creation of a concrete product in a form best suited for the individual staff member. These products can include different types of materials, e.g. presentations and outreach products of different kinds. The course will provide language support for the creation of such materials.

The course will consist of two two hours sessions:

  • Introductory Session: Discuss outreach principles and generate project ideas
  • Workshop Session: Develop materials using appropriate language
