The Work Environment Committee is a decision-making and advisory body whose main task is to ensure that our work environment is safe and secure. The committe participates in planning safety and environmental work and follows up closely on developments in the work environment.

All employees may address the committee with any issues related to their work environment. AMU also raises questions on its own initiative or after receiving input from safety representatives.

AMU's tasks under the Working Environment Act:

  • Consider questions relating to the occupational health service and the internal safety service.
  • Address training and instruction in areas relevant to the work environment.
  • Review plans for the construction of new facilities, renovations or processes that require the consent of the Norwegian Labour Inspection Authority.
  • Consider other plans that may be of material significance for the work environment, such as new machinery, rationalisation measures, work process changes, and preventive safety measures.
  • Participate actively in health, safety and environment initiatives. Take part in assessments, assist in the development of action plans and provide guidance on priorities and measures.
  • Evaluate health and welfare issues related to working hour arrangements.
  • Review all reports related to accidents, near-accidents, and illnesses that may be attributed to the work environment. Focus on the cause of the event and ensure the employer takes the necessary steps to prevent their reoccurrence.
  • Examine all reports relating to occupational hygiene investigations and measurements.
  • Address issues related to accommodating employees with disabilites.
  • Prepare an annual report on efforts made.

AMU also has other tasks as outlined in the Regulations concerning Organisation, Management and Employee Participation.

AMU members at UiA

AMU consists of an equal number of representatives from the employer and employee sides.

Employer representatives are appointed by the University Board, while employee representatives, including the senior safety representative, are appointed by the trade unions.

The term of office for AMU members is 2 years. The chair of AMU is elected for a year at a time from among its members. The role of chair rotates between the employer and employee sides.

The Occupational Health Service is also represented in the committee as an advisory and independent body without voting rights.

AMU has the following sub-committees:

  • AKAN (related to alcohol, drugs and gambling)
  • Safety committee (hazards related to chemicals, gases, radiation and biological agents)
