From Japan

Tell us about yourself.

I am Tomomi Kanegae from Japan, and I study at Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University in Japan. I am studying Social Science and Education here at UiA for one year as an exchange student. I love playing with small children, traveling and discovering the local cuisine. Now I am enjoying a new culture here in Norway and its nature.

Why did you choose Norway?

The reason is that I wanted to learn more about the Nordic lifestyle, values, welfare system and education system. Among the Nordic countries, I decided to choose Norway because it is said to be one of the happiest countries in the world.

How was your arrival?

I did not have any problems with my arrival, and it was exciting. Buddies, professors, staff and even the whole town warmly welcomed us and everyone was very helpful and caring. They created many kinds of events for us to get used to the new environment. I did not feel lonely at all and we were able to meet many people from various countries. Also, there is always someone that you can ask for help if you have problems.

What do you think about the quality of the university and its courses?

I think that the quality of education here at the University of Agder is very high. Professors have strong passion about teaching and the classes are very interesting because of their enthusiasm, and also because many of them have different backgrounds and unique experiences. Since students are also highly motivated and active, it is a perfect environment to study and learn from each other.

What's your favourite place in Kristiansand and why?

My favorite place in Kristiansand is the bridge that goes to the city centre. It is beautiful during daytime and also at night with the lights shining on the river. I often have a walk with my friends in the evening towards night near the sea and the bridge. Kristiansand is a beautiful town and you can enjoy beautiful nature near where you live.

Have you planned any trips?

I am planning to travel to the North of Norway for hiking and seeing the Northern Lights, which is one of my dreams. Also, since I am staying for a whole year, I am planning to visit countries like Denmark, Sweden, Finland and other European countries which is difficult to do from my home country. I am also planning to explore places in Norway such as Trolltunga, Prekestolen, Oslo and Bergen.
