Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students will:
have a broad knowledge of the interplay between the media, communication, globalization and planning
have knowledge about political and cultural communication
be able to reflect on the roles and impacts of news and journalism in society in general and have knowlege aboutemergent new media forms, networks and practices
be able to contextualize the above perspectives in relation to current events and planning issues locally, nationally and internationally
Course contents
Focusing on both local and global perspectives, questions we raise are such as these:
What characterizes the news media and their means and methods of covering politics and societal issues in globalized society?
How ought we to think about media power, freedom of speech, and democracy in a time of media transformations?
What major changes in the development of media institutions and communication technologies ought we to take note of in these contexts?
What kind of roles do the media play in opinion formation, locally, nationally and internationally?
How do political actors apply media strategies in their endeavour to influence the public?
How can we understand various planning aspects within the context of emergent new media forms?
Teaching methods
A combination of lectures and obligatory group work. A workload of 27 hours per ECTS.
Assessment methods and criteria
A portfolio of assignments counts 40 %. Three days individual take-home written examination counts 60 %. More information will be posted in Canvas.
Evaluation
The person responsible for the course decides, in cooperation with student representative, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1.
