English is one of the dominant languages worldwide, and English language skills are in high demand. English language proficiency will increase your chances of collaborating with people all over the world, giving you an advantage in the job market.
The Bachelor’s programme in English (180 ECTS) will provide you with a solid understanding of the history and culture of English-speaking countries, as well as an extensive linguistic knowledge of the language.
The high level of English proficiency in Norway is reflected in the excellence of the teaching, which is partly in the hands of professors who are English native speakers and experts in their respective fields.
The first year gives you a broad introduction to the language and literature, as well as the cultural history of Great Britain and the USA.
During the second semester we normally organise a study trip to York, UK.
In the second year you will choose courses that will supplement your English studies. You may choose courses in a variety of fields. We offer courses in Norwegian for international students on different levels, as well as a course in Norwegian Society and Culture. You may also choose to spend one or two semesters abroad as an exchange student.
In the third year you take advanced courses in language and literature. In the final semester you will write your bachelor’s thesis under the guidance of a supervisor.

Job opportunities
The bachelor’s degree is not a vocational programme. This means you will have to decide what you would like to work with in the future and compose your degree accordingly. Student advisers and career counsellors may help your planning by recommending electives and discussing job opportunities.
English skills are in demand, both in the private and the public sector. A thoroughly planned degree may be a door-opener. Employers will be looking at the total of your competencies, including work experience and organisational work in addition to the actual degree.
Active participation in the Alumni association will provide you with an additional organisational experience which may increase your chances in the job market.

Entrance requirements are Higher Education Entrance Qualification for international applicants and certified language requirements in English.
Higher Education Entrance Qualification
The general basis for admission to universities and university colleges in Norway is called Higher Education Entrance Qualification. You may find what is considered university entrance qualifications from your country in the 'GSU' list. This list states the basic requirements for admission to higher education in Norway. Please download the latest version of the 'GSU' list from this website.
Recommended prior knowledge
Solid knowledge of English exceeding the minimum requirement of one year at upper secondary school / high school.
Application period
- Non EU/EEA international applicants: From 1 November till 1 December
- EU/EEA applicants: From 1 February till 1 March.
- Applicants with a permanent or renewable residence permit in Norway who do not met the Norwegian language requirement: From 1 February till 1 March.
Tuition fees
The Norwegian government has introduced tuition fees for students from countries outside of the EU/EEA and Switzerland.
Student exchange
As a bachelor’s student of English, you may spend one or two semesters abroad as an exchange student in the second year. You may choose to specialise in different courses related to English studies, or choose courses within other fields of study which may be included as a minor. Provided you acquire a preliminary approval from the programme coordinator, the studies abroad will be included in you bachelor’s degree at UiA.
UiA has several approved agreements with partner institutions in Europe, the USA, New Zealand and Australia.
